College of Arts Held 3rd Undergraduate Academic English Forum on Petro-humanities

On December 12, the 3rd Undergraduate Academic English Forum on Petro-humanities was successfully held in College of Arts. The forum was attended by Prof. Sun Renyuan from the College of Petroleum Engineering, associate Pro. Gao Chunxia from the College of Information and Control Engineering, Prof. Wang Xinbo, associate Profs. Yang Fang and Han Shuqin from the College of Arts, and contestants and students from all majors. Wang Xuedong, head of the College of Arts, and Party secretary Zhang Yongning presented awards to the final winners.

 Special prize went to Zhang Chenxin from the College of Chemical Engineering and Kou Ruicong from the College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. 4 students including Li Xuanwen from the College of Economic Management won the first prize, 5 students including Han Qing from the College of Economic Management the second prize, and 11 students the third prize. 

The eight-month forum went through preliminary competition including paper abstract qualification, paper preliminary evaluation and final paper qualification. 23 excellent contestants were shortlisted in the preparatory competition and 11 contestants were selected to enter the final presentation and defense.

At the beginning of the forum, Prof. Wang Xinbo delivered an opening speech for the Forum. After that, candidates presented their dissertations in English, displaying their creative ideas in different perspectives. Among them, Zhang Chenxin from College of Chemical Engineering made analysis about polylactic acid and other materials in terms of cost, efficiency, safety and effect on the environment; Kou Ruicong from College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering elucidated the job disadvantages for female petroleum majors. During that period, discussion became heated between judges and participants on the grounds of their argumentation. At last, Prof. Sun Zhiyuan from College of Petroleum Engineering made a comment about their performance, PPT presentation and the norms of academic writing, encouraging them to continue their passion. Overall, the Forum was a great success.

The Undergraduate Academic English Forum on Petro-humanities was initiated by College of Arts in 2014, aiming at promoting the English academic English education in our school, cultivating college students' academic English communication ability, and satisfying the needs of students' participation in international academic communication. The themes of the first and second forum are respectively Petroleum and Ecology, Petroleum and New Energy. The theme of the third forum is Sustainability and Innovation.
