Lecture on Four-Chinese-Character Idioms

On May 9th, the 19th session of Boya lectures, themed “Further Understanding of Four-Chinese-Character Idioms”, was hosted by College of Arts. The lecture was given by Prof. Liu Zhongfu from College of Liberal Arts, Journalism and Communication, Ocean University of China. The attendants included Shen Zhuangjuan, associate professor of College of Arts, Qi Weihua, associate professor of College of International Education as well as more than 120 students.

Professor Liu took commonly-used idioms for example and explained the development history and usage of Chinese idioms. He also analyzed some common idioms, recounted the little-known meanings and stories behind idioms and shared some methods of learning idioms.

In the Q&A section, some students asked questions about how to learn Chinese traditional culture; in response, Prof. Liu shared his own academic experience and pointed out that learning Chinese idioms is a way to learn Chinese traditional culture.

By analyzing the evolution of some common idioms, this lecture showed students meanings implied in idioms and helped them understand the cultural connotations of idioms, stimulating their interest in Chinese traditional culture.
